Letter from Randy Friesen, General Director of MB Mission

Greetings, friends.

As you may have heard on the news, there has been severe flooding in the northern part of Peru over the past few weeks. This past week, the situation has become desperate. I just received this update from Stacy Kuhns and Joanna Chapa, our workers in Piura who are living in the midst of this crisis:

“Our house has become a disaster relief center for our churches in the area. This past week has been so catastrophic because the Piura River has significantly overflowed its banks. The National Center for Emergency Operations has now reported that over 200,000 homes have been destroyed. Many of our church members have suffered loss, faced evacuation, or are completely isolated. Some from the Chato Chico MB Church are stranded on a hill with about 250 other families, surrounded by deep waters. Some are being evacuated, but many of them don’t want to leave their animals behind. We are hoping and praying that the water recedes. We are also trying to organize housing for those who have been evacuated or have lost their homes. Some are staying in our house and others are being sheltered at other MB churches in the area like Miraflores. This small congregation has taken charge of providing financially for the flood victims but, as you can imagine, this is a huge challenge for them.”

Stacy and Joanna are working closely with a team of local pastors from the 13 MB churches in this region. Together, they are trying to respond to the needs of thousands of people in Piura who have lost their homes or been evacuated. It is estimated that 100,000 houses have been destroyed. Water-borne diseases are rampant and food prices are sky-rocketing. Many of those worst affected by the crisis are children and elderly.

As you pray for these precious brothers and sisters in Peru, please consider contributing financially. Your gifts will help our churches respond to the overwhelming needs for food, shelter and health care. We have made it possible to give through our "Urgent Relief Ministries" project #0140. Please specify “Peru” with your donation. To give on our secure website, click here.
